Find and Replace

The Find and Replace region is used to find specific text, jump to a specific component, replace text, and cross probe in a schematic document. The region and its commands are available in the schematic and schematic library editor in the Tools | Find and Replace region.

Find Text

Click   (shortcut: Ctrl+F) to access the Find Text dialog. The dialog provides controls to quickly find specific or partial text in accordance with defined search options. In terms of scope, the dialog can be used to search for text on the active schematic document, across all source schematics in the active project, or across all open schematics regardless of project.

  • Text To Find - enter the full word or search for a partial string. The latter requires the Whole Words Only option to be disabled. The string can contain the wildcard characters (?) (single character) and * (any group of characters).

    Wildcards are always case insensitive.
Each string searched will be added to the field's drop-down list for quick retrieval.
  • Sheet Scope - use this field to determine the scope of the text search in terms of the schematic documents involved.
  • Selection - use this field to further constrain the scope of the search based on the current selection status of objects.
  • Identifiers - use this field to further constrain the scope of the search based on the type of text-based object.
  • Case sensitive - enable this option to perform a case-sensitive search; the target text must match the case of the search text entered into the Text To Find field.
  • Whole Words Only - enable this option to restrict the search to whole words only. This means the search text must exist fully as is and not be part of a larger text string. For example, if this option is enabled when looking for "cat", the software will not consider the first three letters of "category" a valid search match. Disable this option to freely search for partial strings.
  • Jump to Results - enable this option to have matching/found text zoomed and centered in the main design window (where possible).

Notes

  • When a search yields multiple matches, the Find Text - Jump dialog opens. Use this dialog to jump between the matching search results.

This dialog is also opened by choosing Tools | Find and Replace | Find » Jump to Component, enter a component designator in the Component Designator dialog then click OK. If a multi-part component is returned, the first part will be highlighted and the Find Text - Jump dialog will open.
  • The found text (or all instances for multiple match results) is also listed in the Messages panel. Double-click a message entry to jump to that text in the design space.

Find Next

The Find » Find Next is used to find the next occurrence of the last text search that was specified using the Find Text dialog.

Replace Text

The Replace Text command opens the Find and Replace Text dialog that can be used to quickly find specific or partial text in accordance with defined search options, then replace that text with specified new text.

The options are identical to those in the Find Text dialog.

Jump to Component

The Find » Jump to Component option opens the Component Designator dialog.

Enter the component designator then click OK. The component will be zoomed in the design space. If a multi-part component is found, the first part will be highlighted and the Find Text - Jump dialog will open.

Jump Location Dialog

This dialog provides controls to specify X and Y 'jump' coordinates. While the controls of the dialog remain the same, the actual use of the dialog and its banner text will vary depending on the context in which it was accessed, for example, to paste an object at a particular location in the design space, or to move an object or selection by a certain amount within the design space.

The dialog can be accessed when one or more objects are selected in the design space then choose Tools | Arrange | Move » Move Selection by X, Y.

Cross Probe

The Cross Probe button is used to cross-probe from/to the schematic or PCB editor. Before using the command, ensure that the source schematic and PCB documents are open in the main design space. After running the command, the cursor will change to a crosshair. Select the object in the design space that you want to cross probe to in the target document. The object will be highlighted and zoomed in the target document.
